Coloured Surfacing
Rochbinda - A Cold Applied Anti Skid Surfacing
Description
Rocbinda is a cold hand applied coloured anti-skid surfacing system, consisting
of a polyurethane resin binder dressed with a calcined bauxite aggregate.
Rocabina is suitable for application to asphalt, macadam, and concrete surfaces.
The system comprises a 2-part polyurethane resin (pigmented if required) which
is dressed with a natural, coloured or pigmented aggregate, typically Chinese
calcined bauxite (PSV 70+) and provides a durable coloured surface treatment.
This system complies with Clause 924 of the NRA Specification for Road Works and
has received BBA/HAPAS Type 1 approval for high friction surfaces. Rocbinda is
fuel, oil and chemically resistant. Rocbinda is also suitable for use as a
decorative surfacing using a selection of natural aggregates.
Typical Applications
Rocbinda is applied to areas that are subjected to high braking forces such as:
- Approaches to Roundabouts
- Junctions
- Traffic Lights
- Pedestrian Crossings
- Cycle Lanes
The ease of application and accessibility to remote sites means that Rocbinda
is an ideal surface treatment for areas such as:
- Footbridges
- Railway Platforms
- Ro-Ro Ferry Ramps
- Multi-Storey Car Parks
Key Benefits
- Complies with Clause 924
- BBA Type 1 Approval
- Durable product with a proven long term performance in the most
demanding locations
- Chemically resistant to Oils, Greases and Fuels
- Acts as a waterproof layer
- Quick and easy to apply
- Ready to traffic after 2 hours under normal weather conditions -
compared to epoxy based surfacings - require 7/8 hours cure
- Suitable for use on "No Flame" sites
Surface Preparation
The road surface should be examined for surface defects and texture depth. It
may be necessary to determine the texture depth using the sand patch method to
determine the target rate of spread of polyurethane resin. The road surface
should be clean, dry and free from dust, laitance and foreign matter. Where
contaminants are present, the surface should be cleaned using a water/detergent
solution, then cleaned with water, followed by drying using a hot compressed air
lance.
All existing road markings and ironwork should be masked. - Note: Rocbinda
will not adhere to road markings.
Application should only be carried out at a road temperature of 5oC to 35oC.
If the ambient temperature is < 15oC, a winter grade system is available.
Application
The activator (Component A) is added to the base component (Component B) and
mixed for at least two minutes or until homogeneous, using a high-torque drill
fitted with a helical mixing blade.
The mixed binder is then spread onto the prepared surface with a squeegee at
a minimum coverage rate, which will vary according to the texture and porosity
of the surface but shall not be less than 1.35 kg/m2.
After the binder is applied an excess of calcined bauxite aggregate is
broadcast over the binder and is spread out evenly using a broom or squeegee.
The masking tape should be removed immediately after the aggregate is spread
out. After the binder is sufficiently cured, vacuum sweeper or hand brushing
removes the excess aggregate.
Rolling of the aggregate is not permitted.
Polyurethane Resin
The polyurethane resin consists of a two-component binder that chemically
cures when the parts are combined just before being applied onto the road.
Aggregates
The aggregate used is a calcined bauxite which has a typical Polished Stone
Value (PSV) of 70 and Aggregate Abrasion Value (AAV) of 4. The average coverage
rate is 7-8 kg/m2.
Two grades of aggregates are available, namely;
- Road Grade 1-3mm and
- Pedestrian Grade 0.8-1.4mm
There is a large selection of aggregates available as:
- Naturally Coloured aggregates
- Pigmented Aggregates using the latest lead free resins
- Aggregates with PSV's of ~ 55 are available for use on decorative
applications where skid resistance is not a requirement
The aggregates should be clean and free from foreign matter.
Post-Application
Once the treated surface has cured, suction sweeping or hand brushing before
re-opening to traffic should remove the excess chippings. Where the recovered
chippings are cleaned and free from foreign matter, they should be stored for
re-use.

life trafficking of the pavement.
